There is a saying that man is a social being. People find ways to interact and keep in touch. Thankfully, technology has made that more feasible and convenient; at the click of a button, we can find an old friend we last saw 20 years ago. Beyond that, we can find out where they work, who they are married to, about their children, where they often hang out, who they spend time with and who they have become.
Do you communicate with caution?
Great opportunity must be accompanied with great responsibilities. Sometime ago, I read a story about a lady who was murdered in her apartment by a guy she met on social media. For some reason, she trusted a complete stranger with her life history, pictures and address. Do you know what your children share online? Are you aware that some of the applications share your location? Are you aware that whatever you share online may never be deleted?
Are you communicating with caution?
These days, companies check out their potential employees online as part of the recruitment process. If you google your name, what will pop up? What is your online footprint? Some people post pictures of themselves that project them as irresponsible and reckless, without thinking about tomorrow.
ACTION POINT: Emulate successful companies, they are deliberate about their online image. In fact, they carefully choose what they say, write, tweet and post. Liberty without caution can lead to self-destruction. For your children, consider using internet nannies, be their friends on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, so that you can see what they do.
