“Thank God next week is Valentine, at least mum can smile again”, said Louis
That comment coming from a fifteen year old definitely caught our attention.
“What do you mean?”, we asked.
“Valentine’s day is the only day dad does not shout at mum or hit her. Christmas Day would have been another day, but he shouts when the food is late, which always happens.”
To say the least, we were shocked. Unfortunately, this is the reality in some homes. Some couples do not speak to each other at all. Probably, the buzz of Valentine’s Day gets them into the mood, they reconcile briefly and continue from where they stopped after Valentine. Resolve issues as soon as possible, don’t let them grow into ‘marauders’.
The young boy was truly excited for his mum. That revealed how pained he was by his dad’s actions towards his mum. Some singles do not look forward to getting married because they are scared of having the kind of marriage their parents had or still have.
What kind of marriage are you modelling to your children? Are your children proud of the way you treat their dad/mum?
Hitting your wife is an act of cowardice, a terrible behaviour that scars people beyond a single generation. The same would apply to husbands as well, there are women who hit their husbands unfortunately.
If you are truly one with your spouse, you would want him/her to be happy and not make him/her a punching bag.
Valentine’s Day should not be the only day your children see you hug their mum; speak to their dad respectfully; or laugh together as a couple. Treat your spouse as a King/Queen – always!
N.B.: If you are a victim of domestic violence, please speak up before it is too late.
