People say we are busier in the 21st century. In fact, others call it the rat race millennium; everyone is running and competing, but making little progress.
Another perspective states that we are not really busier, rather we are only more accessible to distractions. For instance, sometime ago, it took 3 months to receive a letter from another part of the globe, today, it takes seconds. If you do the maths, you will understand the drastic reduction in turnaround time.
This also means that we can potentially send and respond to more emails during the day. Technology responded to this development by adding email apps on our mobile phones and in addition to this, social media apps, helping us to connect, communicate and share our lives with the world. We say “with the world” because everything we post can be accessed, including our address, mobile numbers, the store we visit the most and where we spend most of our time. Technology leaves clues.
Talking about technology, today we can be in the same physical space with our loved ones and at the same time, be in different continents via social media. I am not a social media killjoy, but I think moderation is critical. Social media should be a tool to serve, not a master.
Let’s practise active presence today, if we have not been doing that. Put the gadgets away for a while, connect with your daughter who looks at you as she reads her poem. She may interpret your distraction to mean that her creative piece is boring. Listen to your spouse, he/she may have been trying to have quality time with you. Don’t wait for something catastrophic to happen in your marriage before you do the needful. Don’t cheat on your children or spouse with your gadgets. Romance is not automatic.
I celebrate your greatness
