Fear has been defined by notable people in different ways. I won’t begin by defining it because I have observed that emotional concepts often have different connotations and meanings to different people. We all have our own truths, shaped by our experiences, culture, upbringing, etc.. However, I took some time to consider what fear means to me and I have come to the conclusion that fear comes from my interpretation of a situation, a conviction I hold, or my lack of information about a situation. It is an emotion that stands in my way of fulfilling my life’s purpose.
For instance, before we released our first set of books, I had tried to do that for 8 years, but could not get myself to do it. I had fears, doubts and questions I could not answer. I asked myself, what do you know? Who would read your book? Are you an authority? I did not have an external opposition, but all the internal ones were enough to end that dream. Today, my wife and I have published books that have travelled the world because we moved past the fears. The feedbacks from single and married people who use our materials have been awesome, to keep it simple.
Now, I want to ask you, what is that fear that is keeping you from what you want in your life? How many years has it stolen from your dreams and those whose lives you were supposed to impact? How many more years would you allow it to steal from you?
Make a list of your fears – fear of meeting people, fear of public speaking, fear of success or failure, fear of commitment, fear of embarrassment,… and get help. Seek information, don’t ‘mystify’ what you don’t understand. Get a mentor or a coach, challenge the beliefs and convictions fuelling those fears and above all, take action. Make up your mind to end the fear by this weekend!
