I tweeted sometime ago that parents are leaders, but because of the nature of the platform, I did not do justice to the concept. Before we continue, we would like to ask, if you were asked to summarise what you think parenting is in about three words, what would it be? Do you consider it a privilege to shape this world, an inconvenient obligation, an expensive ‘project’, a pension plan, your legacy,…? Now, this is not to leave you with a sense of inadequacy, far from it, our Devotionals are designed to build you up and effectively connect your hearts with the people you love. However, the reason for this question is that the parenting beliefs, paradigms and philosophy which we all have, but may be unaware of, play such a dominating role in who our children turn out to be.
Every child is born with his/her own individuality, captured in the DNA and expressed in his/her personality, combination of traits, talents, unique finger print, etc., but very impressionable. In other words, children become like the people and prevailing ideas in their environment. This is why as parents, we must recognise the responsibility of parenting, God does not waste resources, if he gives you a child, you must be deliberate about serving that child and helping him/her become a replica of God’s original template. This is the measure of successful parenting.
Parenting is leadership and true leadership is service!
THINK & ACT: Spend some time with God to get the template for each child. This will free you from parenting guilt later.
