Sometime ago, we wrote an article on online safety titled, “Who can see your profile?” As family life coaches, we take issues like this seriously because many families have unknowingly exposed themselves to predators.
A certain couple used to post different activities happening in their personal lives; baby christening, purchase of a new car, new house, or any toy they felt their friends on Social Media would be happy to see.
Unbeknownst to them, a criminal who finds his victims online was looking through their family pictures. He often gets pictures from people’s profiles, looking for clues that may provide information about their location, the items in their houses, regular routine, the school their children attend, etc..
After a persistent search, he stumbled on a picture which captured a house address. You may ask, how did this happen? On a receipt which was posted on the refrigerator! On the left hand corner was the shipping address of the recipient.
From that day, the criminal kept watch like a Vulture patiently waiting for a wounded Antelope to breathe its last breath.
The time finally came, during the Summer holiday. Mr. Jones turned on his Facebook app to let his friends know his location and posted pictures of his experiences as he journeyed around Europe.
The criminal went on to carry out a preliminary surveillance of Mr. Jones’ house to be sure nobody was around. The rest, they say, is history. The Jones’ family returned to a vandalised home, with valuables worth thousands of pounds stolen from the house.
This is not to incite fear, but to raise safety awareness as we have seen this affect some families recently. A lot of children have been traced by Peadophiles using such location apps which were left turned on by their parents.
