A wedding day is a day that is regarded as a special day and it is celebrated in grand style depending on the culture of the couple involved, their personal belief and their financial budget.
Looking at it from the Nigerian or African perspective, wedding ceremonies usually come in 3 stages;
The focus of this write up is on selecting the wedding shoes of the groom and his men.
- Introduction Ceremony:
This is a traditional activity that involves the formal introduction of the bride to the Groom’s family. This does not involve the groom’s men, but the immediate members of the two families. The outfit of the groom is usually a native attire.
The choice of material for this includes suede, nubuck or velvet.It is preferable to use shoes without laces, “it is a fashion error to wear lace shoes with native attires”
The type of shoe could fall within the range of loafers, slippers shoes or sandal.These categories could come with accessories like horsebit, tassles and other jewels.
- Traditional or Engagement Ceremony:
The choice of shoes for the Groom in this categories is very similar to that of the Introduction ceremony, except that the Best man is not involved in this and sandal is not appropriate in this category. The use of Agbada sown with fabrics like guinea brocade, Aso oke and other fabrics is appropriate.
The choice of colour of the shoe will be determined by the fashion taste of the groom. It is best to wear shoes in bright colours like blue, Green, Carton brown, purple and so on, according to how it marches with the outfit of the groom and Best man. This is simply because the day is seen to be a special day. The groom and the bride are the symbol of the day.
- White and Church wedding:
The choice of outfit could be corporate or/and semi-corporate. It is usually a creative idea for the Groom and the Best man to wear the same type and colour of shoe.
The Groom’s men could stand out by wearing the same type of shoes and the same color different from the groom and the best man.
The type of shoe could range from lace oxford, derby and monk shoes. These designs can come as plain or as a brogue design made with suede, leather or/and patent leather.
