I don’t want flowers, just treat me right!

It’s 6 days to Valentine’s Day. The energy is building up in specific quarters. Some people may be planning to make an impression of their new date, others planning to propose/hoping to be proposed to, different relationship skills may be ‘dusted and picked off the shelves’ where they were probably kept since Valentine’s Day last year. Statistics have it that the amount of gifts that exchange hands during this period is second only to that of Christmas. In as much as there is nothing wrong with this, it is important to ensure that we don’t excessively focus on the outward expression of love at the expense of quality intimacy and romance. There are many couples who create a public show of love, but treat each other as enemies behind close doors.

“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart” 1 Samuel 16:7. In this scripture, the emphasis is on the fact that God pays more attention to our thoughts, attitudes and dispositions (all of which emanate from the heart) than our public appearance. Hence, to build a stronger marriage, focus more on treating each other well in the bedroom, start from thinking the right thoughts and saying the right words to your spouse. When we settle these, the external show of affection will be more genuine.

THINK & ACT: Are you more concerned about what people think of your marriage than what your spouse thinks? When was the last time you had a real discussion with your spouse to know how you can improve things?

I just want to thank GOD for your lives, for being a vehicle of inspiration to us and many couples all over the world.

More grace and may GOD continue to inspire and replenish you.
