We have been examining the changing trends in marital institutions and how to adapt and leverage on them to achieve the marriage of our dreams.
CHIDI: I heard a story about a family, the wife earns ten times her husband’s income (He used to earn a lot more, but was a victim of downsizing). The nature of their jobs involved a lot of travelling. Thus, they had to leave their young children in the hands of helps and neighbours. They both decided that the husband would stay home for a while to lay a proper foundation for the children. This sparked an avalanche of criticism from friends and family members who thought the lady should have been the one to resign as it is the responsibility of the woman to care for the children.
VICTOR: Hmm…this is a serious matter. I believe that as long as they are happy and are in alignment with their family values of putting family before work, they should be fine. Problems arise when we worry about what people will do or say, thereby, making decisions that leave us worse off. More so, as a man, beyond earning more than your wife, what makes you the head is your ability to develop a compelling family vision (with everyone’s input). Of what use is a clueless head without direction and drive? According to John Maxwell, “people respect and submit to leaders with compelling character and vision”.
ACTION PLAN: Define your family vision and values ahead of time because they will be the guiding light in tough times.
