During my first degree, I was introduced to a course that shook me to my core. It challenged me to review many assumptions about my faith and to dig deeper in order to clarify what I truly believe. One of the things I discovered was the concept of freewill and determinism.
The concept of freewill states that who we are, who we are becoming and where we would end up are all determined by our choices. We decide our destiny, hence we hear comments like “man is the architect of his destiny”. On the other hand, the concept of determinism states that who we are, who we are becoming and where we would end up, are all predetermined on our behalf. Hence, you hear comments such as “what will be will be”.
However, because our family draws its frame of reference and worldview from the scriptures, we have come to see that both perspectives of existence can be found in the bible. For instance, the scriptures state in Proverbs 23:7 “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he”, this expresses freewill because it implies that our thoughts, decisions and actions determine where we end up. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10. This scripture captures an element of determinism.
Why have we gone to great length to illuminate these concepts to you? It is important for you to remember that a mere change in chronology (2016-2017) or yearly declaration would not determine how 2017 would end up for your family! You must take responsibility. Personally, we begin in the month of November to prayerfully set goals and make plans for the new year. This way, we hit the ground running. “Don’t let life drag you on, give it direction” – Bishop David Oyedepo. Find out God’s plans for your family and get down to business.
