Sometime ago, I had a conversation with a very wealthy mentor of mine on inheritance and during the discussion, he pointed out that he purposely withholds some benefits from his children with the aim of getting them to learn how to thrive and make their own mark in destiny, rather than depending on the wealth he acquired. As fathers, we must ensure we go beyond transferring material wealth to our children, to transferring our thinking patterns, world views, insight in business, relationship-building, product development, negotiation, etc. Rather than give them fish, teach them to fish. We have seen siblings fight over the wealth that was supposed to be a launching pad to a better future. Make it your goal to deliver them from dependency mindset.
“Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity” Ecclesiastes 2: 18-19. This scripture is not negating the importance of leaving an inheritance for your children, what it does emphasise is ensuring that they are wise because wisdom is the principal thing, wisdom guarantees if they would multiply or squander what we leave behind. A prudent, responsible and wise child is a Father’s delight.
THINK & ACT: Draw your children into your world, get them involved in your process of decision-making (progressively), what you leave in them is as important as what you leave for them.
